Meet Your Attorney
James Howes

For more than four decades, James Howes has represented Kentuckians in Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation, and Social Security Disability cases. A Vietnam veteran awarded two Bronze Stars for heroism, he applies the same dedication and courage in the courtroom—working tirelessly to protect his clients’ rights and maximize their recovery.

Meet Your Attorney
James Barnett

James Barnett’s path to becoming an attorney began in the injury law field, working as a litigation paralegal. It was there that he first managed cases, worked directly with clients, and saw firsthand the challenges injured people face when they’re up against insurance companies and legal red tape. That experience sparked a passion for guiding people through difficult times and ultimately led him to pursue a law degree so he could advocate for clients at the highest level.

After earning his B.S.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Louisville, James attended Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law, graduating cum laude. Now, as an attorney, he draws on his years of real-world case work to deliver skilled, practical, and client-focused representation.

James is admitted to practice in all Kentucky state courts, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky.

When he’s not advocating for clients, James spends nearly all his free time with his wife and their two young children—usually outdoors, at the grill, or making the most of family time.

FAQs

How long do I have to file a personal injury claim in Kentucky?

In Kentucky, the statute of limitations for most personal injury claims is one year from the date of the injury. It’s important to speak with a Kentucky injury lawyer as soon as possible to protect your rights.

However, some cases may involve exceptions or 'tolled' time periods that extend the deadline, and not all claims follow the one-year rule—making early legal guidance essential.

Do I pay an injury lawyer upfront in Kentucky?

No. At Howes & Barnett PLLC, we work on a contingency fee basis. You pay nothing unless we win your case.

What should I do after a car accident in Kentucky?

Seek medical attention immediately, document the accident scene if possible, and contact a Kentucky personal injury lawyer to protect your legal rights.

Can I get workers’ compensation if my employer denies my claim?

Yes. Our Kentucky workers’ compensation attorneys can appeal denied claims and fight for your wage replacement and medical benefits.
